The Norwegian Government announced an Ocean Strategy, “New Growth, Proud History,” on Feb. 21. For marine countries such as Norway and the United States, the ocean is the new economic frontier. The ocean economy promises great potential for economic growth, technological development, innovation and job creation. Maritime transportation services play a key role.

The ocean is critical for solving some of our most pressing global challenges: Offshore energy resources, including a booming offshore wind energy industry, will help meet the world’s growing need for energy. Sustainable fishing and marine aquaculture will help feed the world’s growing population. Exploiting new assets such as marine genetic resources opens new horizons for economic development. Seabed mining will provide access to more natural resources. Maritime technologies and digitalization will have increasing importance for all these activities.

If we are to enhance the sustainable and long-term development of the ocean space, we need to discuss questions such as:

• How can we ensure that the various ocean industries learn from each other?
• How can the private and public sectors build capacity and partnerships to realize the ocean space´s vast potential?
• What role can digitalization, autonomous ships and green technology play?
• How do we strengthen international cooperation related to the ocean economy?
